Built Environment Showcase – FREE Guided Tours & Talks

Event Description:
The Rediscovery Centre is hosting FREE guided tours and FREE talks as part of the Built Environment Showcase. These tours will run from Tuesday 28th June until Saturday 2nd July.

The built environment is responsible for almost 50 per cent of raw materials consumption in Europe. Join our FREE guided tours for a Circular Economy Showcase of innovative and practical ways to reduce the carbon and material impacts of our construction and built environment.

Set in the Rediscovery Centre's repurposed Boilerhouse in Ballymun, a demonstration centre of excellence for the circular economy, this showcase will cover circular design, sustainable materials and reuse and repurposing into our built environment.

Visitors of all ages will learn the unique background of the Rediscovery Centre, the history of the old Ballymun Boiler House, and the work that the Rediscovery Centre carries out for the benefit of the community, the circular economy and our planet.

We are also delighted to be joined by a panel of experts who will give a talk on a different subject each day.

Circular Economy Academy – Laois

Event Description:
The Circular Economy Academy provides business support services including advice for start-up, circular business planning, development, funding, diversification and training. The Academy also supports organisations to replicate the Rediscovery Centre’s successful paint, furniture, fashion and bicycle reuse initiatives.

The Circular Economy Academy is delivered in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency through the Circular Economy Programme.

This event will start with an exploratory workshop discussing opportunities for community projects in the circular economy covering the Rediscovery Centre’s social enterprise journey, an introduction to design thinking, successful funding models and other support services available. The workshop will close with a Q&A and an opportunity to network with like-minded organisations.
The workshop will be followed by 30 minute one-to-one mentoring sessions for anyone with a specific circular economy project in mind (e.g. waste prevention, reuse, repair, lending, environmental innovation). These sessions will take place throughout the afternoon.

Building and Renovating Natural and Healthy Homes

Event Description:
Join renowned architect and Professor Tom Woolley for a one-day interactive workshop to look at the wide range of materials and construction techniques needed to build and renovate natural and healthy homes.

• An explanation of airtightness, energy efficiency and chemicals used
• Introduction to conventional construction methods, building materials and where construction materials come from. How they are manufactured and how they can damage the planet.
• Reviewing the materials used in the Rediscovery Centre and other samples of healthy and not so healthy materials
• A session on the theory of embodied energy, chemicals and bio-based materials
• Demonstrating the methods of checking and testing indoor air quality

• Details of all the alternative eco, bio-based and recycled building materials
• A look at construction methods, including timber framing and other options
• Where to source building materials and how to save money and keep budgets low
• How to improve and renovate your home or build a new one

About your tutor:
Professor Tom Woolley is an international recognised Architect who has published eight books on sustainable construction. He has also constructed many exemplar eco-buildings and runs training workshops around the world. Tom has been a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Alternative Technology. He was a consultant to the Rediscovery Centre on the selection and specification of building materials for the reconstruction of the Ballymun boiler house and also consulted on the early concepts for the Rediscovery Centre almost 20 years ago. Tom’s latest book Natural Building Techniques will be available at a significant discount to participants
