Intermediate Level Bicycle Maintenance – Online Workshop

Event Description:
This workshop is for those that are familiar with making small adjustments on their bike already or working with tools in general, looking to get more hands-on with their own bicycle maintenance. We will demonstrate tasks such as tube and tyre removal and replacement; brake maintenance, and replacing pads and cables; troubleshooting gear shifting and adjustments, and information on chain replacement. While a beginner's workshop concentrates more on introductory information and small adjustments to keep the fastest wearing parts of the bike in good condition, this intermediate level session gets into the inevitable jobs or replacing those parts when they wear out.

Rebuild Your Bike

Event Description:
This workshop will have participants rebuilding their own bike, learning how to remove and set up each bike part as they go along, and what compatibility issues they may run into when replacing parts.
At the Rediscovery Centre, all bikes that are sold in our eco store have been completely stripped down to the frame and rebuilt as there is no better way to properly inspect and clean all of their parts.

This class will include:
• Installing headset and bottom bracket bearings
• Assembling pedals, cranks, saddles, and handlebars
• Fitting wheels and tyres
• Setting up brakes and gears from scratch

This class does not include:
• Electronic gear shifting mechanisms
• Bleeding hydraulic brakes
• Spoke or wheel hub bearing replacement

Parts provided as part of the class, if needed:
• Replacement loose ball bearings
• Brakes Cables and Housing
• Gear Cables and Housing

This workshop is suited to those who already have some maintenance knowledge. Those with no experience maintaining bikes or using hand tools may find it difficult to retain the skills practised for future use.Participants are encouraged to bring their own bike to work on so as to learn to maintain their specific parts. If participants are unable to bring their own bike, a bike can be provided – send us an email to bikes@rediscoverycentre.ie with a description of the type of bike you typically use and we can do our best to have something similar for you on the day.

**Important: You can only bring bikes that are already in good working order and that are suitable for this class. Class time is limited and does not allow for e.g. attempting to unseize corroded components, remove damaged bolts, major cleaning or rust-removal. Also, some bikes have major components that are only designed to be removed if they are then being replaced. Please email bikes@rediscoverycentre.ie to confirm your bike is suitable. Those looking to book a place in the workshop are encouraged to send pictures of the bike they intend to bring.

*Minimum numbers required for workshop to take place

*Participants must be 16 years or over
