Tours of the Rediscovery Centre

Event Description:
The Rediscovery Centre is hosting tours for small groups. Visitors of all ages will learn the unique background of the Rediscovery Centre, the history of old Ballymun Boiler House, and the work that the Rediscovery Centre carries out for the benefit of the community, the circular economy and our planet. A visit to the ‘living laboratory’ will be an engaging experience taking visitors on a journey through understanding sustainability, biodiversity and community action. Encompassing the workshops, outdoor garden, educational features and much more, visitors are guaranteed to come away with a better understanding of environmental care, the circular economy and take away helpful tips for greener living.

Tours are available Monday to Saturday from 10am-4pm. Adults tickets are €7.50, students and OAP tickets are €6.00 and children are €5.00. If you would like to book a tour please email visit@rediscoverycentre.ie and we will book it in for you.

4 Week Course – Learn How to Make a Pattern from your Favourite Clothes

Event Description:
Do you have a cherished item that you wish you had bought two of, or the same in a different colour? Are the ever changing micro seasons of Fast Fashion making it difficult for you to find clothes that you like and feel good in?

In this 4 week course, every Thursday you will learn the basics of how to make a pattern from your favourite clothes without having to deconstruct them. Choose one item to make a copy of and our expert tutor Arran Murphy will guide you through all of the steps needed to create your very own version of your favourite item, from pattern drafting and cutting to construction and finishing.

Class 1 May 5th – Create your pattern

Class 2 May 12th – Cut your fabric

Class 3 May 19th– Construction

Class 4 May 26th - Finishing

*Attendees must be over the age of 16
*Some sewing machine skills are required

Foraging, Wild Foods and Herbal Extractions Workshop

Event Description:
Interested in Sustainability, Natural Remedies and Wild Foods?

Wild Sióg, finalist in the International 'Free From' Skincare awards 2021, will speak about foraging, the medicinal properties of Irish Wild Herbs and herbal extraction. You will learn how to make a vitamin rich tonic and come away with inspiration for handmade, sustainable gifts. Wild food samples are provided along with foraging recipes to try at home.

Make Your Own Swift Box – Parent & Child

Event Description:
Swift populations have declined in recent years and this is attributed to the loss of natural breeding sites. Swift boxes give the birds a safe place to breed. During this workshop, Nessa Doran O'Reilly, programme manager at Rediscover Furniture, will help you and your child assemble a Swift box. Working as a team you will learn how to use a marking gauge, how to glue and pin, and also how to pilot drill and screw your nest boxes together ready to be brought home. All tools and materials will be supplied.

This event is taking place for Biodiversity Week and it is kindly supported by the Irish Environmental Network.

* Ticket is for one adult and one child
* The minimum age to participate in this workshop is eight years old and all children must be accompanied by one adult.

Join us at the Rediscovery Centre for our Nature Explorers workshop for kids. We will be exploring urban wildlife in our pond and garden, doing a range of fun hands-on activities such as pond-dipping and bug hunting. Children will learn about food chains and food webs, Irish ecosystems and how small daily actions can help promote and conserve our natural environment. Suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years.

New Parent and Baby Upcycling and Sewing Group

Event Description:
Are you interested in finding ways to create less waste as a family?

Join Arran Murphy from Rediscover Fashion for a series of textile upcycling workshops for parents and babies. Each week Arran will demonstrate a different textile upcycling project which you can either observe, take part in or take home with you to do in your own time.

The projects will focus on repurposing old items of clothing belonging to you and your baby into functional, decorative or sentimental items such as dribble bibs, textile mobiles, cushion covers and simple items of clothing for your baby as well as a relaxing eye cushion for your own self-care!

Bring along your baby, learn new skills, and be inspired to reduce your family’s textile waste in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere as well as meeting other new parents.

These workshops take place over four Fridays starting the 27th of May until the 17th of June.

Lego® Pixel Art

Event Description:
Join the Brickxclub for a creative Lego® brick building workshop for children aged from 5-12 years old. It has been developed to help children learn through play and fun!

Station 1
Skill and techniques - we learn skills like interlocking bricks with 2x4 bricks, pyramid building, bridging etc

Station 2
Themes and stories - boxes of mixed Lego where we pick a theme from a box and build houses, gardens, stories using your imagination

Station 3
Large selection of minifigures, dinosaurs, bionicles- build as many as you like and then make a habitat

Station 4
Pixel art- using 2x2 bricks we follow patterns to make pokemon, unicorns, boats etc

Station 5
Duplo - make giant buildings and animals

Station 6
Architectural zone- build your dream house
