Tours 20 January – 26 January 2020

Event Description:
Take a guided access all areas tour of Ireland’s National Centre for the Circular Economy and Europe’s only environmental ‘3D Textbook’ building. Visitors of all ages will learn the unique background of the Rediscovery Centre, the history of old Ballymun Boiler House, and the work the centre carries out for the benefit of the community, the circular economy and our planet. A visit to the ‘living laboratory’ will be an engaging experience taking visitors on a journey through understanding sustainability, biodiversity and community action. Encompassing the workshops, outdoor garden, educational features and much more, visitors are guaranteed to come away with a better understanding of environmental care, the circular economy and take away helpful tips for greener living.

Circular Economy Conversations – Hempcrete Seminar and Workshop

Event Description:
The Rediscovery Centre first launched its series of Circular Economy Conversations in 2019. These events focus on raising awareness and fostering discussions on different aspects of the circular economy. Our next Circular Economy Conversation in 2020 is about Hempcrete in circular economy construction.

This event includes presentations, discussions and hands on demonstrations around hempcrete and its place in the future of circular construction.

Introduction to Sewing for Beginners

Event Description:
The Rediscover Fashion team will teach you the basics of sewing so that you will feel confident enough to start your own projects. We will start at the absolute beginning and show you how to thread a machine, wind a bobbin and we will also demonstrate all the different functions of a sewing machine finishing with sewing samples.

Greener Living Workshop

Event Description:
During this Greener Living workshop, Zaneta Wright will teach you how to live a greener life in your home and how to make your own beauty products.

This workshop is for people who are looking for alternatives to cleaning products and chemical-laden beauty regimes that are safe, non-toxic and don't come in plastic bottles. It is a practical, hands-on session in which you will learn how to make laundry liquid, limescale solutions, surface cleaners and lotions and potions including body scrub and body lotion.

Introduction to French Polishing

Event Description:
French polishing is a wood finishing technique that results in a very high gloss surface and with a deep colour. This hands on workshop is hosted by Ger Griffin who joined the Rediscovery team in 2010 and has more than 30 years of experience in antique furniture restoration.

This is a hands on introductory workshop that will include the following:

Upcycle Macrame Wall Hanging Workshop

Event Description:
Ever wanted to learn macrame? Then come join Chris and Tash from Grá agus Sonas Creations, in the Rediscovery Centre for a morning of craft to create your own macrame wall hanging by reusing old clothing.

In this fun workshop you will learn how to recycle old clothes by cutting them up and using the basic macrame knotting techniques to create a beautiful piece of textured wall art to take home and hang straight away. This workshop is perfect for beginners and for experienced crafty folks.

The workshop includes:
- Macrame supplies - but if you have a piece of old clothing you would like to use then please bring it along. No worries if not as we will supply everything you need on the day.

Four Week Bicycle Maintenance Workshop

Event Description:
This is a four week evening course for the beginner bike mechanic covering all of the most common repairs and maintenance areas in detail:

- Tyres: Identifying the size and type of tyre for your bike, correct tyre pressure, and how to remove and replace the tyre and tube on either wheel.
- Brakes: Fully stripping and rebuilding a cable-operated brake, including the brake pads and cable, from scratch and adjusting it to optimal performance.
- Chains: Breaking and reconnecting a chain as well as cleaning, lubricating, and identifying a worn chain and what type of chain is need for replacement.
- How to tune Gears: both front and rear gears, learning the function of each adjusting bolt and troubleshooting shifting issues.
- Other small adjustments and checks: tightening bearings in the wheels, bottom bracket, and headset; Adjusting saddle and handlebar positions; learning a full comprehensive method for checking the bike in full.

Participants will get hands-on experience working with each of these areas, giving them the skills to maintain their own bicycle, save money by replacing parts themselves, and extend the life of its components. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bicycle in order to become familiar with their particular parts and how they work.
