Green Enterprise Summer Camp

Event Description:
The Rediscovery Centre has partnered with NCAD to present Green Enterprise summer camps for young and emerging entrepreneurs. The one week camps will run on 8 - 12 July and 15 - 19 July. Second level students will work in groups over five days to develop a sustainable business idea that they will pitch in a Dragons' Den style presentation on the final day.

Each idea will be developed through a combination of discussions, sketching, subject talks, sustainability workshops, and hands-on prototyping activities.

During the week students will explore Sustainability, Entrepreneurship, Creativity, Innovation, Design Thinking and Design Strategies; Product based business and /or Service based business.

The camps will be of interest to secondary school students who study ANY of the following subjects:
Senior Cycle: Art, Business; Construction Studies; Design and Communication Graphics; Engineering, Physics, Politics and Society, Technology.

Junior Cycle: Visual Art; Business Studies; CSPE; Environmental Social Studies; Technology.

These camps are free to attend. Places are funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

Circular Economy Academy Clinic

Event Description:
Dr Sarah Miller is a PhD qualified environmental scientist with a degree in biotechnology, a Masters in Business Administration and over 20 years experience in enterprise development. Sarah established the Rediscovery Centre as a small research and education centre in 2005. The Centre has grown to develop four successful social enterprises, Rediscover Fashion, Rediscover Paint, Rediscover Cycling and Rediscover Furniture. The Rediscovery Centre also created Europe's first 3D Text book in 2017 which now operates under a strategic partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, as the National Centre for the Circular Economy.

The workshop is delivered as an interactive group which includes a review of the Rediscovery Centre’s social enterprise journey, an introduction to design thinking, Q&A and an opportunity to network with like-minded organisations. Sarah will also explain a number of successful funding models and other support services available for social enterprises. This clinic will be followed by one to one meetings. These meetings can be booked once you have registered for the clinic.

This workshop is delivered at the Rediscovery centre, a demonstration eco-facility and a centre of excellence in sustainability incorporating educational exhibits, renewable and efficient energy systems, sustainable building materials, rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling, composting toilets and gardens designed for biodiversity enhancement and environmental education.

Summer Camp for Kids

Event Description:
Looking for some fun activities for your children during the summer holidays? Then why not join us for a week filled with fun hands-on activities? The Rediscovery Centre Summer Camp takes place from the 22nd of July to the 26th of July. Our Camps are themed days with educational and fun activities, games, experiments and arts and crafts to stimulate their curiosity and interest in our natural environment.

Our Summer Days camps are suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years old. Our facilitators are experienced in working with children and are Garda vetted.

Biodiversity: We will explore the wildlife, habitats, ecosystems and food chains in our gardens. A range of outdoor games will also be included such as making bird feeders, going on a bug hunt and pond dipping. We will also look at how easy it is to encourage biodiversity at home and why it is so important to do so.

Science: How important is science in our lives? What cool things do scientists do? Come and try your hands at acid- base reactions, discover the power of magnets and other intriguing experiments like the chemistry of bubbles and learn about the tricks our sight plays on our brains!

Space: Interested in space, what’s in it and why it does what it does? Do you want to build and launch your very own rocket and become an expert on meteorites impacts? Then come and join us for this journey in space!

Engineering: Discover why engineering is such an essential part of our lives in this exciting investigation into what makes the world tick. Different engineering challenges will put your mathematical, problem solving and analytical skills to the test.

Waste: Worried about waste and how best to deal with it? This day is dedicated to finding exciting and innovative solutions to dealing with waste through quizzes, activities and crafty designs. Just because it’s ‘waste’ doesn’t mean that it’s useless!

What to bring: sun screen/rain jacket, water, hat/cap, food for a small break and lunch, lots of imagination and curiosity!

Sustainable School of Magic

Event Description:
Magician Colm Dawson joins us for a special Sustainable School of Magic session to share his knowledge of over 25 years of magic and illusion with students. Colm combines magic, illusion & comedy to be one of the funniest and most versatile entertainers, having performed internationally for Woody Harrelson, Ryan Tubridy and the President of Ireland as well as extensive work in Theatre and TV (Smock Alley, Keith Barry).

The session will excite, inspire and surprise students as they delve into card magic, mind reading, coin tricks, optical illusions and science magic. Students will be learning magic tricks using sustainably sourced materials.

The students will also learn about the important elements of a successful routine such as scripting and of course, showmanship! At the end of the session students will be equipped with the skills to amaze friends and family with their scripted tricks that they will have learned.

No previous knowledge of magic is needed and age appropriate magic will be taught. Suitable for children aged 5 - 12 years old.

Introduction to Composting

Demystifying Organic, Bio-Dynamic and Natural Wines

Event Description:
A wine tasting experience for curious wine lovers. During this informative masterclass we explore the differences between conventional wine making and the natural wine movement. We discover the facts about sustainable wine growing, wild fermentation, organic, bio-dynamic & natural wine.

No experience or previous knowledge about wine is necessary, this workshop is designed to be social, interactive, entertaining and educational. We will also debunk some wine myths surrounding this topical subject.

Do you fancy tasting these type of wines? I will carefully select five lovely wines to showcase how diverse and interesting these styles of wine can be.

I will guide the group though how to taste wine properly, highlighting the difference in aromas & flavours. We will look at production methods & explore the basics of food & wine pairing.
