Biodiversity Explorers

Event Description:
Calling all nature explorers!! Join us during Biodiversity Week 2019 when the Rediscovery Centre will be running two fantastic Biodiversity Community Events.

Our Biodiversity Community Events offer people an opportunity to engage with nature and learn more about Ireland’s biodiversity. During the Biodiversity Events, our friendly staff will be at different biodiversity stations located around the Rediscovery Centre such as our green wall; constructed wetland; native species area, bug-hotel; sensory garden; rain-fed pond; vegetable garden. Each station offers an opportunity to learn more about the species inhabiting ecosystems and how to conserve biodiversity. Hands-on activities at the event include explore invertebrates during the bug hunt, learning all about what is living in our pond, and gardening for biodiversity.

The Biodiversity Community events are suitable for all ages and families are very welcome. Wheelchair accessible.

Furniture Revamping Workshop

Event Description:
Join Marianne from The Revamp Tramp for her ever popular Furniture Revamping Workshop at the Rediscovery Centre on the 15th June 2019. Bring along a piece of your furniture to revamp and learn how to prep and paint furniture while also learning furniture techniques including decoupage, glazing, distressing and stencilling. If you are unsure if your piece is suitable for upcycling please email your pictures to marianne@therevamptramp.ie

The workshop takes place over a full day and runs from 10am to 4pm and the price includes a light lunch. This workshop will help you turn your chosen piece of furniture into something special and most importantly it will be designed by you.

Home Bicycle Maintenance Workshop

Event Description:
This full day workshop is broken into two sessions and it will take place on Saturday the 29th of June in the Rediscovery Centre.

Introduction to Home Bicycle Maintenance
This section of the workshop will show you what you’ll need at home to maintain and look after you bicycle. Full safety check of a bicycle, replacing a tire & repairing a puncture. We will start with an overview of the: types of bicycles, parts of the bicycle, tools required, lubricants, cleaners how to do a safety check of a bicycle and we will finish off with hands on learning how to remove a wheel, repair a puncture and put the wheel back on correctly.

Intermediate Home Bicycle Maintenance
All you need to know about Maintaining and Servicing Brakes. Identify and repair common problems with their brakes cables, housing and pads. This section of the workshop provides a full overview of the different types of brakes, how to assess, maintain and replace brake pads, cables and housing.

Green Enterprise Summer Camp

Event Description:
The Rediscovery Centre has partnered with NCAD to present Green Enterprise summer camps for young and emerging entrepreneurs. The one week camps will run on 8 - 12 July and 15 - 19 July. Second level students will work in groups over five days to develop a sustainable business idea that they will pitch in a Dragons' Den style presentation on the final day.

Each idea will be developed through a combination of discussions, sketching, subject talks, sustainability workshops, and hands-on prototyping activities.

During the week students will explore Sustainability, Entrepreneurship, Creativity, Innovation, Design Thinking and Design Strategies; Product based business and /or Service based business.

The camps will be of interest to secondary school students who study ANY of the following subjects:

Senior Cycle: Art, Business; Construction Studies; Design and Communication Graphics; Engineering, Physics, Politics and Society, Technology.
Junior Cycle: Visual Art; Business Studies; CSPE; Environmental Social Studies; Technology.

These camps are free to attend. Places are funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA)

Summer Camp for Kids

Event Description:
Looking for some fun activities for your children during the summer holidays? Then why not join us for a week filled with fun hands-on activities? The Rediscovery Centre Summer Camp takes place from the 22nd of July to the 26th of July. Our Camps are themed days with educational and fun activities, games, experiments and arts & crafts to stimulate their curiosity and interest in our natural environment.

Our Summer Days camps are suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years old. Our facilitators are experienced in working with children and are Garda vetted.

Biodiversity: We will explore the wildlife, habitats, ecosystems and food chains in our gardens. A range of outdoor games will also be included such as making bird feeders, going on a bug hunt and pond dipping. We will also look at how easy it is to encourage biodiversity at home and why it is so important to do so.

Science: How important is science in our lives? What cool things do scientists do? Come and try your hands at acid- base reactions, discover the power of magnets and other intriguing experiments like the chemistry of bubbles and learn about the tricks our sight plays on our brains!

Space: Interested in space, what’s in it and why it does what it does? Do you want to build and launch your very own rocket and become an expert on meteorites impacts? Then come and join us for this journey in space!

Engineering: Discover why engineering is such an essential part of our lives in this exciting investigation into what makes the world tick. Different engineering challenges will put your mathematical, problem solving and analytical skills to the test.

Waste: Worried about waste and how best to deal with it? This day is dedicated to finding exciting and innovative solutions to dealing with waste through quizzes, activities and crafty designs. Just because it’s ‘waste’ doesn’t mean that it’s useless!

What to bring: sun screen/rain jacket, water, hat/cap, food for a small break and lunch, lots of imagination and curiosity!

Make and Take Pallet Table Workshop

Event Description:
Would you like to learn how to make a unique piece of furniture out of pallets? Rediscover Furniture's experienced antiques restorer and furniture upcycler Gerard Griffin will teach you all the skills that you will need to make a unique pallet table for your home. The Rediscovery Centre will provide all of the materials and tools for this workshop. And the best thing? You get to bring your finished table home with you!
