Creative Design for Sustainable Living

Event Description:
Are you interested in design? Do you want to learn more about sustainability?

This fun, hands-on creative design week-long summer course is aimed at teenagers, and suitable for ages 12 - 17.

This course will give the attendees an opportunity to learn about the challenges that society is facing from climate change and environmental problems, and what we can do to tackle these issues. It will also teach you about the creative design process, issues such as waste, biodiversity, water and climate change and how we can live more sustainably.

We will engage in hand-on creative challenges, activities and the opportunity to develop a group project that works towards a more sustainable future.

- What we can do - The Circular Economy
- Principles of Sustainable Living
- Design process

Furniture Revamping Workshop

Event Description:
Join Marianne from The Revamp Tramp for her popular Furniture Revamping Workshops. This workshop is suitable for everyone from beginners to those who would like to learn new furniture revamping techniques.

Learn how to prep and paint your furniture before trying out many different techniques including decoupage, stenciling, glazing, distressing, using frog tape and how to plan out a design for your piece. You will leave the workshop with a fully finished piece of revamped furniture.

All materials are provided on the day to turn your piece of furniture into something really special. You only need to bring the piece of furniture you would like to revamp. The workshop is a full day and runs from 10 a.m to 4.00 p.m. The price for the full day workshop is €100. Spaces are limited and will be filled on first come first served basis.

Tea/Coffee and a light lunch will also be provided and in the interest of doing our bit for the environment please bring your reusable cup if you have one. Free parking outside the venue is available.

Summer Camp for Kids

Event Description:
Looking for some fun activities for your children during the Summer holidays? Then why not join us for a week filled with fun hands-on activities! The Rediscovery Centre Summer Camp takes place from from 6th to 10th July. This camp is suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years old.

Each day is themed with educational and fun activities, games, experiments and art and crafts to stimulate their curiosity and interest in our natural environment.

Biodiversity: We will explore the wildlife, habitats, ecosystems and food chains in our gardens. A range of outdoor games will also be included such as making bird feeders, going on a bug hunt and pond dipping. We will also look at how easy it is to encourage biodiversity at home and why it is so important to do so.

Science: How important is science in our lives? What cool things do scientists do? Come and try your hands at acid-base reactions, discover the power of magnets and other intriguing experiments like the chemistry of bubbles and learn about the tricks our sight plays on our brains!

Space: Interested in space, what's in it and why it does what it does? Do you want to build and launch your very own rocket and become an expert on meteorites impacts? Then come and join us for this journey in space!

Engineering: Discover why engineering is such an essential part of our lives in this exciting investigation into what makes the world tick. Different engineering challenges will put your mathematical, problem solving and analytical skills to the test.

Waste: Worried about waste and how best to deal with it? This day is dedicated to finding exciting and innovative solutions to dealing with waste through quizzes, activities and crafty designs. Just because it's 'waste' doesn't mean that it's useless!

Acrylic Pour, Make Your Own Moulds and Transfers Workshop

Event Description:
Join professional upcycler Beverley Wilde from Revamped, on the 18th of April for a fun day with like-minded crafters. Learn how to do an acrylic pour and create your very own clay moulds and apply decorative decor transfers.

During this full day workshop you will see how it’s done and then create the following:

* acrylic pour on canvas, a technique that can also be used on wood furniture, tiles etc
* paint and decorate a plant pot with hand-made mould embellishments and decor transfers.

Beverages and a gourmet sandwich lunch will be provided.

Please bring along an old towel or sheet for the car and an apron (limited number available). Everything else is provided in the workshop.

Introduction to Felting Soap Workshop

Event Description:
Join Martina Wall for this fun Introduction to Felting Soap workshop. Participants will learn the art of wet felting and they will be able to make colourful and creative designs.

Martina will provide all of the required materials to make four felted soaps during the workshop and participants just need to bring a towel with them. Participants will also be given printed notes so that they can experiment at home.

Felted soap, is soap wrapped up in a cocoon of wool and wet felted using friction and hot water. Participants will be able to make unique designs on their soap and the wool not only acts as an exfoliant but it also helps stop bacteria from forming on the soap. Felting the soap also makes it last up to four times longer. When the soap is finished. the wool can be reused as a dish scrubby or another soap can be popped in (or the wool can be composted as its 100% biodegradable).

Invisible Mending for Knitwear

Event Description:
Join Terri O'Brien on the 28th of Match to learn how to extend the life of your favourite piece of knitwear by learning the invisible mending technique. Terri will provide all of the materials for the workshop or if you have a knit piece in need of repair, bring it along and get advice and assistance for the mend.

By learning the invisible mending technique, also known as swiss darning, you can ensure you get the most from your knitwear and enable you to keep a more sustainable wardrobe for years to come.

Urban Explorers Biodiversity Workshop

Event Description:
Join us at the Rediscovery Centre for our Biodiversity workshop for kids. We will be exploring urban wildlife in our pond and garden, doing a range of fun hands-on activities such as pond-dipping and bug hunting. Children will learn about food chains and food webs, Irish ecosystems and how small daily actions can help promote and conserve our natural environment.

*Suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years.
*Please bring waterproof clothes/sun screen and a hat depending on the weather as we will be mostly outdoors.
