Sitting on the cross-hairs of energy use, resource consumption and skills, cities are at the heart of the international debate around a circular transition and Doughnut Economics. However, bolstered by the COVID-19 urban exodus and recently announced governmental funding under the Our Rural Future strategy, Irish rural communities have bright prospects ahead of them. More recently, many Irish rural communities have shown outstanding sustainable innovation, such as The Aran Islands Energy Cooperative and Ballina Green Town, supported by the Mary Robinson Centre.

Could rural communities be the future forefront of the Irish circular transition?

For this Instagram Live session, we will be debating Ireland’s circular transition, taking examples from both urban and rural innovations at home and abroad. Moderated by Steve O’Reilly, Project Manager at the Rediscovery Centre, the session will will feature Dana Behrman, Senior Urban Designer and Associate at UNStudio, who has lead circular urban interventions at all scales across the globe.
