Naturally Dyed Decorations

Posted on 23rd December 2022

Our talented Rediscover Fashion team hand-dyed these beautiful Christmas decorations with Turmeric and Blueberries!

Many common textile dyes are toxic and contaminate water sources. Using natural dyes such as roots and berries is a great way to safely and beautifully add colour to your textiles.

Fancy creating some naturally dyed decorations yourself? Our talented creative Siv from Rediscover Fashion has compiled a guide for you to follow.

Blueberries (Purple)

  1. Take a handful of blueberries, and bring them to a boil in a pot of water.
  2. Allow for some of the colour to seep into the water, about 15 minutes or so.
  3. Strain the liquid and allow it to cool.
  4. Soak your natural fabric in the dye (100% cotton works best, and is easily accessible)
  5. The more intense colour you’d like, the longer you should leave in the dye.
  6. Rinse in cold water and air-dry.

Turmeric (Yellow)

  1. Bring a pot of water to the boil.
  2. Take the water off the heat, and add 2-3 teaspoons of ground turmeric.
  3. Leave the mixture to cool.
  4. Add your fabric.
  5. The more intense colour you’d like, the longer you should leave in the dye.
  6. Rinse in cold water and air-dry.

NB: We didn’t use a fixative for this project, as the fabric won’t be subject to much washing.

We’d love to see some of the sustainable decorations hand-made this Christmas, send us photos of your creations!
