28 community groups avail of free recycled paint in Eastern Midlands Waste Region waste prevention competition

This September, the Eastern Midlands Waste Region in association with the Rediscovery Centre, sought submissions from community groups and organisations  to participate in a unique competition to win up to 40 litres of free recycled paint for their community projects with an additional opportunity to win an overall cash prize of €500 and annual membership to the Rediscover Paint.

The competition was a huge success with twenty eight community groups being selected to receive free recycled paint. The groups have used the paint to bring new life to community spaces and to enhance buildings in need of redecoration. Once painting was completed three finalists were selected to compete for a €500 cash prize for the most creative use of the paint.

On Friday the 24th of November the Rochfortbridge ‘No Name Club’ was announced as the overall winner at an awards ceremony in the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun. It is a new club for young people aged between 15-18 and they have been allocated a new home in their parish hall. The room hadn’t been painted since 2008 and was in urgent need of redecoration. The members of the club and some of their parents got together to select colours and to paint the room. The Rochfortbridge No Name Club now has a new home that reflects the personalities of the young people that use the service.

The remaining finalists were Men’s Networking Resource Centre of Ireland who helps disadvantaged men, women and families to address the various challenges in their lives. The paint was used to refresh the drop-in centre to make it more inviting and welcoming for local homeless and unemployed people who visit the centre each day.   Also, the Ballyleague (Lanesborough) Area Men’s Shed used their paint to complete a model train display and to refresh the display room.
