Food Rescue Café Pilot
We are so excited to announce the launch of a new Food Rescue Café pilot, in our own Boiler House Café!
This project, designed to prevent food waste, is funded by the EPA Ireland’s Green Enterprise Programme.
In Ireland at least 1.1 million tonnes of food waste is generated annually. In order to reach national and European food waste reduction targets, working examples of business models that manage surplus food are needed.
This Food Rescue Café (FORCE) project will source surplus food from a local farm, Ballymun SuperValu, and social enterprise Food Cloud to:
- Evaluate the capacity of a Food Rescue Café to reduce food waste;
- Develop operational and training guides for Food Rescue Cafés;
- Evaluate the different supplier options for surplus food &
- Explore potential barriers to sourcing and using surplus food in a commercial setting.
The aim is to create a roadmap for other cafes wishing to utilise surplus food, and develop some delicious recipes along the way!
