Lead on Project: Rediscovery Centre

Status: Open

Introduction:

The Let’s Talk Science Festival 2023, hosted by the Rediscovery Centre, will revolve around the theme of Exploring the Wonderful World of Science: giving the general public the opportunity to explore and engage with science and STEM in a hands-on fun approach. On Saturday 11th November, we will host an in-person all-day event which will be open to members of the public, and will offer engaging and innovative STEM activities suitable for all ages.

The format for the festival event will include in-person activities and stands at the Rediscovery Centre. For this event, we will develop and host a wide range of different innovative STEM activities, mini-workshops, speakers, and interactive stands, and invite relevant NGOs, organisations, companies, and universities working in the STEM area to participate.

Background:

This event aims to make science accessible and engaging to people in Ballymun, a recognised area of social disadvantage with many people experiencing substantial social exclusion, and communities all around Ireland.  This year’s festival will give the general public the opportunity to explore and engage in science and STEM with science professionals and organisations.

Objectives:

The aim of the festival is to inspire, engage and create greater public awareness of the impact of STEM on society, and its connection and contribution to everyday life; encouraging the next generation of scientists and engineers.

The Let’s Talk Science Festival 2023 will break down stereotypes of STEM and provide an insight into STEM-related careers, while also reaching audiences not normally engaged with STEM, and creating interest through applications of science and hands-on activities. It will do this by making STEM, particularly science, accessible in an informal manner to local residents of Ballymun, and the wider Dublin community. There will be over 20 different activities for visitors to engage with, all covering STEM themes in a fun and exciting way.

Next Steps :

The in-person festival will take place on the 11th October 2023 at the Rediscovery Centre’s Boiler House, which is ideally placed to offer the festival a unique and inspiring location to encourage sustainability, particularly as we are the National Centre for the Circular Economy. The event is open to the public and we look forward to seeing you there!
